Volcan Villarica |
We are currently traveling in the lakes district of Chile and
there are a lot of volcanoes. We stayed in a cabana in the town of Caburgua and
had a great view of Volcan Villarica. Volcan Villarica is 2847 meters above sea
level and is one of only four volcanoes in the world with an active lava lake.
In the Region de la Araucania there are seven major volcanoes. Most of these
volcanoes are still active. In 2009 Volcan Llaima erupted for three months. While
Volcan Llaima was still erupting, its lava flow melted a giant glacier on its
west slope. We saw evacuation routes in case Volcan Villarica erupts.
We are now staying in Entre Lagos a town next to Volcan
Puyehue and Volcan Casablanca and a big peak that we think is Cerro Frutilla.
From our cabana there is a wonderful view of the lake and Volcan Puyehue. Volcan
Puyehue blew its top in 1960. Today we went on a nice little hike and when we got back to our
car we thought we might want to go to see some waterfalls. When we did get to
the first waterfall my brother and I went on a little beach by the waterfall.
While we were exploring the beach I jumped off a log onto what I thought was
ground but turned out to be some floating volcanic rock like perlite. By the
time I figured that out it was too late and my pants and shoes were soaked, and
I hit my knee really hard on a rock. It really hurt to walk and we had to walk
uphill. We were going to have a picnic, but there was these giant, really
annoying bugs everywhere so we just left.

Since there are so
many volcanoes there are also lots of hot springs. We went to a hot
springs in Parque Nacional Puyehue. I enjoyed the hot springs there, but they
were really hot. They had two hot springs one next to a river and an enclosed one.
We also went on a walk there before the hot springs and there was a bridge with a view of the outside hot springs.
It makes me kind of scared to be staying right next to active volcanoes. I also think that volcanoes are kind of cool because they are a very
powerful source that spews ash across the planet when they erupt.
