Textiles in Peru and Maximo Laura

While we have been traveling in Peru we have seen a lot of textiles and weaving because its a big thing in Peru. We have seen this art in Cuzco, Pisac, and Puno. For example, a lot of women have been weaving in markets, on sidewalks, and everywhere. We also went on an island tour on Lake Titicaca and mostly men were weaving there. The boys on the island were selling hand woven bracelets. We also went to gallery in Cuzco about a Peruvian textile artist named  Maximo Laura.

Maximo Laura was born in Peru in 1959. He is one of the best textile artists in Peru, and his art is very interesting. The way he makes his art is: first he sketches what he wants to make, they use a computer to make a pattern, then his team and him go to their warehouse of yarn, and then they start weaving on a big loom. A lot of the textiles that are big take months to finish.

In the gallery we saw lots of really cool tapestry's and the one I liked a lot was "Spring Love". The reason I think that the art piece "Spring of Love" is my favorite is because it has a lot of green which is one of my favorite colors and I thought it just looked really cool. Here is a picture of it so you can see what you think.

What I see in this art work are a lot of plants and birds. When I look at this tapestry it makes me think of the forest and mother earth. The object that looks closest is the tree lady, and the objects farther away are the birds and snake leaves. The sounds this tapestry would make would be chirping and leaves swaying. Maximo titled this "Spring Love" but I think it looks more like the forest rather than spring and I would title it "Busy in the Forest". I think that Maximo did a good job on this art work because he made a cool picture of the forest that shows how much life is in the forest and how it blends together.

  1. The tapestry you posted is beautiful. The colors are rich. I imagine the details are quite impressive when you see it in person. It reminds me of some of the beautiful quilts displayed at one of the San Francisco's museums.
After all the snow and frigid weather we experienced last week; a tropical scene is very inviting.
