Comida en Chetumal

The taco stand
We arrived in Chetumal two days ago and went for a walk around dinner time in search of food. We found a little taco stand that had amazing tacos. The taco stand was pretty nice for a small food stand--it had chairs in front with tables and a roof made with a tarp. It was kind of close to our hotel but we made it a longer walk since we didn't know about it yet.

The next day we went to breakfast at a little restaurant next to our hotel and my brother and I got hot cakes (pancakes) and hot chocolate. I saw the hot chocolate being made and the way they made it was by putting chunks of chocolate into a pitcher, then grinding it and adding warm milk. It was super duper good. After breakfast we took a bus to Lago Bacalar. The lake was about three feet deep right when you got in so it was kind of surprising and cold. For lunch that same day we got a big plate of food to share that had pollo, carne asada, pescado, verduras, and octopus. When we got back to Chetumal we thought that the little taco place was so good that we went there again for dinner and it was still really good.

The same thing happened with breakfast today. We went to the little restaurant and got the same thing, and again it was still delicious. For lunch today we had tamales that were too spicy for my mom, my brother, and me but my dad liked them. Because the tamalas were so spicy (muy picante) we got some empanadas. We got the tamales from a woman selling them on the sidewalk and the empanadas at a market close by. After lunch my brother and I got popsicles and his was spicy so he got kind of mad.

On the walk back from our lunch we saw a tortilleria that had a machine the made fresh tortillas from dough and then cooked the cut tortillas that were then put on a small conveyor belt to where they were sold. The tortilla maker machine was a lot different then the other tortilla makers we saw. It was different because the other ones we saw you could only make one at a time and it was with your hands. One of the fun things about traveling is trying the new foods.

  1. Wow, another delicious chocolate treat! The hot cocoa and pancakes look yummy. Actually, all the food pictures and descriptions make me hungry. Perhaps you could ask for recipes or better yet, try to duplicate the dishes.
