Instead of stocking produce in the mercados, there are agromercados throughout the city. When we arrived in Havana, our apartment host Marko, told us that the agromercado near us was one of the biggest in Havana. In these agromercados you can find a variety of fresh produce and sometimes meat, it is a lot like a farmers market. Most of our breakfasts are made up of the things we buy from these agromercados - comemos mucho pina y bananas.

A typical breakfast |
The bananas in Cuba are very small, firm and sweet. You also have to buy huevos en el agromercado, which is another thing comemos por desayuno. Along with agromercados, you can find little carts de frutas y vegetales on the street. Many of these carts are on bikes. Like produce, most mercados do not carry bread or meat. There are neighborhood panaderias, where you can find fresh bread, and meat stands where we bought pork for our eggs and rice. You can also find bread from sellers on the street.

Bicycle fruit stand |
Today is a Sunday and most of the big agromercados closed early. So while we were on our daily walk looking for food, we found bananas at one of the bicycle carts, and pina from a random man in front of his house. At the end of the day, we made a fruit smoothie with our pina, banana y jugo de pina, manzana y mango, sat down, and took several refreshing sips of our batido de frutas naturales...muy bueno!
